About the Conference
The NAEA National Convention is an annual event providing substantive professional development services that include the advancement of knowledge in all sessions, events, and activities for the purpose of improving visual arts instruction in American schools. As such, it is the world’s largest art education convention.
The three-day Convention includes over 1,000 participatory workshops, panels, seminars for job-alike groups…research reports, discussions, exhibits, and tours…keynote addresses by world-acclaimed educators, artists, researchers, and scholars…with the opportunity to connect with your colleagues from all over the world. Each year, some 110-200 exhibitor booths displaying the latest art textbooks, high-tech software, prints, slides, curriculum materials, equipment, and programs, as well as the latest studio and art history media are made available for examination and review by art educator delegates.
It is a professional development opportunity to update oneself on the vista of state-of-the-art materials to advance visual art instruction in local art programs. All sessions and events are 100 percent content-oriented and substantively based. There are no non-content functions such as golf, sightseeing, shopping tours, and the like. Sessions are scheduled daily from 8:00 am to 11:00 pm.

The Washington Art Education Association is affiliated, at the national level, with the National Art Education Association. The mission of the WAEA is to promote excellence in visual arts education, advocacy, leadership, professional development, and scholarship in Washington State.
The WAEA has more than 300 members, including Arts Specialists at every level, with arts representation from administration, museum, retired and higher education. There are 3 elected officer positions, ten appointed chairpersons along with past-presidents and president-elects who serve as the WAEA Board of Directors.

WAEA Summer Leadership Retreat
Business and pleasure wrapped in an artistic package!

All WAEA board members, committee chairs, ESD and division reps… plus anyone interested in serving in a leadership role in WAEA is invited to this summertime business and pleasure retreat. Last summer’s retreat was a great event with lots of business, bonding and playing!
Business activities will include new leadership training/ orientation for any new members to the advisory board. This will include a review of policies and procedures for your role and how to access Google Docs and other board benefits and resources. As a team we will also write the new 2018-2022 5 year strategic plan and update WAEA policies/procedures and the annual WAEA budget. ESD and Division reps will brainstorm outreach ideas. The Co-Presidents will share out info from our Pacific Region Leadership Conference.
Pleasure activities will include art making workshop, sight-seeing trips, ghost-hunting, wine-tasting and karaoke!
GOLDEN Paint workshop with Barbara De Pirro : Mixed Media
An hour workshop/lecture all levels and backgrounds; from painters, mixed media, fiber to sculptural artists……ideas for all! presentation covers a wide variety of techniques for use in a wide range of media. Learn about paints and mediums, including Watercolors. Gain an understanding of each product and their different attributes. Learn how to make the right choices in grounds and paints for the best intended application. Learn what to put under paint, and how to create washes, stains, and collage. We also cover the use of stencils, paint markers, pastels, and pencils, as well as the creation of encaustic-like effects. This is a great place for beginners and experienced artists alike to learn new techniques and be inspired by innovative applications. Attendees will receive Information packets & free samples.

The work of eight Mexican/Chicano artists are featured from April 27 through June 3. The art showcases a rich history that exists as a result of Mexican migration to the Northwest.
Over the Rainbow: Alfredo Arreguín April 27 – June 3
Opening Reception: April 27, 5-8pm
This solo exhibit will be a small retrospective covering many periods of his work since arriving in the Pacific Northwest more than six decades ago. For decades Arreguín has specialized in creating canvases exploding with ornate patterns and bright colors. His paintings often include imagery of pre-Columbian cultures, the landscapes of Mexico and portraits of iconic cultural figures such as the painter Frida Kahlo.
CONVERGENCE: Contemporary Mex-Xicano Art in the PNW April 27 – June 3 Main Gallery

The exhibit, “CONVERGENCE: Contemporary Mex-Xicano Art in the Pacific NW” will showcase the rich history and art that exists as a result of the Mexican migration to the Northwest.
The curator, Dr. Flores, explains that the works included will “epitomize the diversity of our community and the range of interests and activities that have defined the evolution of a Chicano/Mexican aesthetic expression in the Pacific Northwest over the last sixty years.

Attendance is free and aiming to bring together a multiplicity of professions (artists, scientists, historians, educators, librarians, archivists, museum professionals, digital humanities etc. all welcome!)
The conference is put on by the Teaching with Primary Sources committee of the Reference, Access, and Outreach section of SAA, and will be held at the Portland Art Museum.

The third annual Teaching with Primary Sources Unconference with members of the Washington Art Education Association. The TPS unconference will be held on Tuesday, July 25, 2017 from 9:00am – 5:00pm in Portland, Oregon at the Portland Art Museum.
This free event is open to everyone interested in using primary source material for teaching, from all institutions and with all levels of experience. It’s a place where educators from all backgrounds can get together and help each other with beyond-the-textbook teaching. There will be a variety of workshops and attendee-driven conversations, covering all aspects of teaching with primary Sources. Registration will begin in early summer. Arts Impact is hosting a two-day conference titled Engaging Heads and Hearts: Social Emotional Learning and the Arts. Each day of the two-day conference begins with an opening session by Arts Impact Director, Beverly Harding Buehler. Then select from a range of classroom-ready sessions in dance, theater, and visual arts that are infused with social emotional learning. Discover the power of arts-infused learning and assessment strategies for deepening student engagement and raising achievement.

The Washington State Fair is pleased to offer young artists from the Northwest an opportunity to showcase their best work at the Fair’s 30th annual Junior/Senior High School Art Show. Students, grades 6-12 enrolled in a middle school, junior high, high school or home school equivalent, are invited to participate in what many consider to be the area’s most prestigious show for the artistic community’s younger generation. Thousands of people will view your students’ artwork during the 20 days of the Fair. September 1 – 24, 2017 (Closed Tuesdays & Wed 9/6)

Teachers, Parents, and Students are always welcome to deliver art, Students are encouraged to self-submit as well. We look forward to hosting you again this year and have some suggestions that we believe will make the Intake run more smoothly and require less of your time. Please take a moment to go through the following list:
- Schools will be registered 1-school at a time. Mislabeled work will be pulled and placed up front for corrections. Once corrections are completed by the teacher, they can be entered for judging.
- Some classes from prior years are either not used or renamed, so please use the booklet to identify the classes which apply to the artwork you are entering.
- Artwork needs to adhere to the matt board or frame with permanent tape. Larger pieces will require more tape. Glue sticks and lightweight tapes fail in the humid environment of the Fair. We have had instances whereby students’ artwork ends up on the floor when applied with these temporary methods.
- School, student name, and a name of the piece must be on the back of each entry. All labels from prior shows must be removed prior to entering into the Washington State Fair.
- Artwork framed or matted improperly will require correcting prior to being accepted into the Show.
- Students’ entries not present for Intake, will not be accepted. No Exceptions.
Thank you for your attention to these matters. Our goal is to provide your students with an arena to display their creative accomplishments successfully. Your assistance in this endeavor will aid us in achieving that end. We look forward to a very successful exhibit and appreciate the contribution each of you offers with the entries of your student’s creativity.

Schack Art How2’s: Adding the “A” to STEM
Adding the “A” to STEM will be a game changer in your classroom. Sign-up for this series of four workshops and learn innovative methods to guide your students toward creativity, collaboration and engagement by incorporating a STEAM model. Each session will explore the key role of creativity and provide activities for making authentic connections between art – and science, technology, engineering, and math. Participants will discover new ways to help students “connect the dots.” Activities will be grade level adaptable and budget minded. This course does meet the STEM requirement for certification.
